2007 IAMAs Presented June 24, 2008

The 17th International Automotive Media Competition concluded June 24, 2008, with the presentation of the 2007 International Automotive Media Awards (IAMAs).The event was held at the Automotive Hall of Fame, Dearborn, Michigan, in conjunction with the North American Concept Vehicles Awards.  This new venue was well-received; we look forward to returning next year. The full list of award recipients follows.

The International Automotive Media Award for Lifetime Achievement went to Karl E. Ludvigsen. He has been active for over 50 years as an author and historian. In addition to his extensive activities in auto media, Karl has held executive positions with GM, Fiat and Ford. Ludvigsen currently resides in England.
As he was unable to accept this award in person, his great and good friend, David E. Davis, Jr., accepted it on Karl’s behalf—and shared with us some personal comments about Karl. Coincidentally, David E. Davis, Jr. was the first recipient of the IAMA for Lifetime Achievement. This was the 10th annual presentation of this peer-driven award.

Previous honorees are:
Jim Dunne, Popular Mechanics, 2006
(the late) Beverly Rae Kimes, historian, author, writer, 2005

Auto Enthusiast Walter R. Haessner dies at 71

Tucson, Ariz., December 31, 2006: Walter R. Haessner died Wednesday morning, December 27th, of lymphoma-related causes. Always the optimist, he fought this disease since 1998, never giving up hope there would be a cure. However, beginning January 14, 2006, one infection after another kept him bedridden at home or in the hospital for the better part of the year, until finally his immune system could cope no longer. It was time for this tough old Marine to move on to the final adventure.

Highly respected throughout the automotive world, Walt will be missed for his cheerful laugh that could fill a room, his gleeful enthusiasm about whatever his current activity might be, his willingness to share his knowledge, and his dedication to accuracy in media.

His communications company, AZTEX Corporation, publishes non-fiction books, primarily in the fields of transportation, auto racing and corporate history.

Additionally, he founded Exergonic Technology Corp. in 1986, which distributes hi-tech lubricants and greases. This began with auto-related products, and has grown into a full line of industrial products.

Long recognized as an automotive expert, Haessner served as consultant and/or executed projects for the Franklin Mint, Ford Motor Company, Shell Oil Company, Mobil Oil Corp (ExxonMobil), Fram Filter Co., Jaguar Cars N.A., Lubrizol Corp., Unocal, and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.

Walt was born May 17, 1935, in Passaic, N.J. At an early age he moved with his mother and step-father to Miami, Fla. Summers were spent with his father in New Jersey.

In 1954 he went on two years active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps, during which time he completed high school, went to camera repair school, got married, became a father, and achieved the rank of corporal.

After service, he was purchasing agent for Century Engineering Co. in New Jersey, for which he had worked summers during high school. He then went to Reaction Motors (Thiokol) as a high speed engineering photographer working on the X-15 missile project, followed by a period at Cape Canaveral, Florida, with RCA Missile Test Project as one of 300 photographers hired out of 30,000 interviewed.

While at the Cape, he went to the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring as a track photographer. He left the Cape in late 1962, returned to Newfoundland, New Jersey, and began his own marketing/public relations/photography/publishing business. Walt was East Coast photographer for Sports Car Graphic for 1963 and 1964. His first publishing contract was for the 1964 12 Hours of Sebring race program. One of his more memorable marketing gigs was arranging to have Great Western Champagne of New York in the Winner’s Circle of the (circa) 1971 Can-Am races.

Well-known in automotive corporate and automotive media circles in the 1960s and 1970s for his involvement with the 12 Hours of Sebring as commercial public relations director, which incorporated all sales of advertising as well as solicitation of sponsorship monies, Walt also joined the late Bill Finefrock in producing advertising/editorial inserts and/or full race programs for the Can-Am, Trans-Am and Formula 5000 sports car series.

Haessner garnered numerous awards, both for his writing and as publisher. These include the Imperial Palace Moto Award 1988 for an editorial in Restoration News Bulletin; two Society of Automotive Historians Cugnot Awards for the books “MACK” by John B. Montville (1974), and “My Two Lives: Race Driver to Restaurateur” by Rene Dreyfus with Beverly Rae Kimes (1984); as well as two Antique Automobile Club of America Thomas KcKean awards for “MACK” by John B. Montville (1974), and “Tire Wars: Racing with Goodyear” by William Neely (1994). Five titles have been book club selections.

In 1983, Haessner founded the International Society for VEHICLE Preservation (ISVP), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization. The Society’s purpose is to spread an appreciation and understanding of the benefits of freedom of movement to society worldwide, to assist in accurate preservation and restoration of vehicles and related artifacts, and accurate recording of the history thereof.

The idea for this organization arose from a meeting with the late Henry Austin Clark, Jr., at his home in Glen Cove, N.Y., at which time “Austie” told Walt the only way it would happen is if Walt just “went and did it himself.” And so he did, with the support of an eclectic group of individuals from auto racing, collecting, media, museums, archiving, restoration--from Italy, France, England, and the US, who served on the Board of Advisors.

One of the Society’s main functions today is the annual International Automotive Media Competition, to recognize and encourage excellence in all forms of automotive media. For the fourth year, the Truck Writers of North America has asked ISVP to administer its awards program under the same standards.

Walter R. Haessner was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and several automotive journalism organizations. He held a BS in marketing.

Haessner’s interest in things automotive goes back to his childhood. He got his driver’s license at 14, bought his first vehicle: a 1923 American LaFrance Brockway Torpedo chemical fire truck, and did a ground-up restoration on it while still in high school. He had an extensive automotive library as well as photo archives.

Though much of his life centered around automobiles, Walt became fascinated with computers while at the Cape in the early 1960s and his interest therein grew exponentially over the years. He consumed computer manuals, was an avid science fiction devotee, and was “owned” by an old grey cat.

He leaves behind his wife and soul-mate of 52 years, Elaine C. (Jordan) Haessner; three beloved children: Ursula Haessner Cochran of Florida, Walter W. Haessner of Arizona, and Dora E. H. Crow and husband Jim of California; and four adored grandchildren: Lane Ferguson and Sara Cochran of Florida; and Eric and Stephanie Crow of California.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that anyone wishing to make a remembrance in his name send a donation to either the American Cancer Society, or to the Haessner family church (his great-uncle was the first pastor there): St John Lutheran Church, 140 Lexington Avenue, Passaic, NJ 07055.

A service, followed by a Celebration of Life, will be held at St John’s at a date to be determined. Those wishing to attend, or to be kept up to date regarding this, are asked to contact Elaine Haessner at isvp@earthlink.net so your e-mail address may be added to the register.

Jim Dunne and Jean Jennings take top honors

TUCSON, ARIZ, Dec. 18, 2006-- Veteran auto writer/spy photographer Jim Dunne is the 2006 recipient of the International Automotive Media Award for Lifetime Achievement. This is the 9th annual presentation of this peer-driven award.

Dunne has been Detroit Editor of Popular Mechanics for the past 21 years.
His career began with a column for national magazines in the mid-1960s, which continues today.

Jim’s reputation nowadays is equally based on being one of the pioneers in so-called spy photography. As photographer or writer, he travels extensively.

In addition to all the above--auto writing, photography and travel, together with an active sports life--Jim Dunne is a safety device inventor/patent holder, and fit in a stint as technical writer for Redstone Missile.

A native Detroiter, Dunne is a graduate of the University of Detroit and a U.S. Army veteran. He has seven grown children, and lives now in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.

Overview of IAMC Rules

The International Automotive Media Competition (IAMC), a function of the International Society for Vehicle Preservation, is an awards program. The purpose of this program is to recognize and encourage excellence in all forms of automotive media. Judging is by peers, to a standard; entries may earn up to 100 points. The Foundation International Automotive Media Awards (IAMAs), Bronze (85-91), Silver (92-96) and Gold (97-100) medallions, are presented for those works so qualified; from among the highest-point (98-100) Gold awards are chosen the Best of Divisions, with Best of 2006 being chosen from the Best of Division awardees.
Thus, the Foundation IAMAs are a competition against a standard, whereas the Best of Divisions and Best of the Year IAMAs are a competition against other award-winning works.

Judging

Judging of entries is by peers. Entries must meet a minimum standard to qualify for awards. If no entry in a category meets the minimum standards no award will be made in that category. Entries will be judged by Category within their Division.

About the International Automotive Media Competition

The International Automotive Media Competition (IAMC), is a program to recognize and encourage excellence in all forms of automotive media.
The IAMC™ is administered, produced by and is a property of The International Society for VEHICLE Preservation, ©2006 all rights reserved. ISVP™ is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) educational organization. IAMC and the International Automotive Media Awards (IAMA) are the property of ISVP™. All awards are final.

Recognition of Lifetime Achievement and Past Honorees

This award is given to an individual who has, in the eyes of his peers, made a substantial contribution to the craft over a period of twenty-five or more years. These awards are determined by a committee of thirty members of the automotive media voting for two of five names submitted by the Selection Committee. Both committees change each year. The continual varying of selectors and voters ensures a broad cross-section of input in determining each year’s recipient.

Previous honorees are:
Beverly Rae Kimes, historian, author, writer, 2005
Jerry Flint, Forbes, 2004
John Lamm, Road & Track, 2003
Brock Yates, Car and Driver, 2002
Chris Economaki, National Speed Sport News, 2001
Denise McCluggage, author, writer, 2000
(the late) Leon Mandel, AutoWeek, 1999
David E Davis, Jr., AUTOMOBILE, 1998.

More on Jim Dunne --

Jim Dunne, Detroit Editor of Popular Mechanics for 21 years, has been selected by peer vote as the recipient of the 2006 International Automotive Media Award for Lifetime Achievement.

An automotive writer for over 40 years, his career began with a column for national magazines in the mid-1960s which continues today. His writing duties focus on evolving activities in the auto industry worldwide, especially as they affect the auto business - mostly the products - in Detroit.

His specialty is revealing the secrets that auto companies like to keep from the public, especially those that reveal the shape and substance of their future vehicles. Despite Dunne’s skill with the written word, and many years of track testing cars and trucks, his reputation nowadays is equally based on his ability with the spy camera.

His product-related coverage ranges from air bags, FM, XM radio, DVD, night vision, drive by wire, navigation, turbines, 3-, 5-, 10-, 12- and 16-cylinder engines, flex fuel, turbines, and hydrogen fuel, to rotarys, electrics, and many more.

High profile personalities in the field of autodom found a place in Dunne’s writings as well. Five icons of the past stand out: Henry Ford II, John Z. Delorean, Lee A. Iacocca, Mario Andretti and Jimmy Clark. More recently, he has written about newsmakers including Michael Jackson (AutoNation), Bob Lutz (GM), Dieter Zetsche (DCX), Jim Padilla (Ford) and Bob Stemple (GM/Ovonics).

Dunne’s photographs have appeared in all the major newspapers and car magazines in the US, in many European and Asian publications, and on television around the world. One of the pioneers in so-called spy photography, Dunne’s success spawned numerous wanabees.

His first spy photo to make publication was of the revised Corvair, shot on a test track at the GM Proving Grounds in Milford, Michigan. Taken from over the fence in an area now known as “Dunne’s Grove”, the photo had the dramatic quality of real life testing, not something posed. That prompted one national magazine buyer to write Dunne that the “Š. photo is electrifying. Get us some more.”

Magazine cover photo credits included cars like Corvette, Mustang, Lincoln, Camaro, Chrysler LH.

Dunne points to his Army service as a precursor to a big part of his life’s work. During the Korean War, he served as NCO in charge of an infantry Intelligence and Reconnaissance Squad. Jim claims the Recon part - spying from unlikely places - serves him well in his picture taking pursuits.

Through the years, his work travels have taken him to just about every country in Europe, several Asian countries, Morocco and South Africa.

He has been sued for millions of dollars over a story written on the unproven benefits of so-called “miracle gas savers” (lawsuit withdrawn), and, been investigated in a matter of purloined proprietary photographs (the investigation stopped well short of official government interviews).

And yes, there was life before journalism. In the early years his resume would include a long list of medium-skill jobs, including newspaper boy, produce clerk, driving instructor, salesman (shoes, magazines, office and construction equipment), postal service driver, roofer, furniture mover, Chrysler press machine operator, and repo driver.

A life-long sports enthusiast, Jim’s current top recreations are tennis, reading, sport fishing, and travel. Of course, the art of Palmistry, practiced by Dunne as a professional and amateur, is one of his more notable pastimes.

SIX MONTHS GONE DOWN THE DRAIN

A quick and easy way to lose six months

Tucson, Ariz., July 22, 2006. ...The past six months I was bedridden with one thing after another (flu, pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, pneumonia-caused encapsulated cavity, hospital staph infection, --plenty of time to ruminate on IAMA--but not in a position to bounce it off anyone else and when one spends so much time thinking one can easily overlook something—Do you see something I should give consideration to?? Let me know by July 31st, 2006.

I won’t bore you with the details, it all started January 14 with the flu till the middle of March, and I was in the hospital for 5 weeks in April-May—over the past few weeks I’ve learned to walk again!

Though I have been down, that is not the main reason for changing things—as I was looking at what to do as soon as we got back last November.

We have posted the new entry forms today (Saturday, July 22th) and my health is not going to be an issue—but I felt you should know as I am asking for your input about these changes over a very short period of time.

Any comments please have to me by July 31st, 2006

Sincerely,

Walt

IAMA ENTRY FORM AND RULES FOR 2006

IAMA sees some changes this year

Tucson, Ariz., July 22, 2006. The primary change in the IAMA program this year is to forego formal presentations of the awards for the immediate future. Dates for entries and announcement of awards are also changed.

I’d like your input on the following: reasons, entry schedule, awards distribution, etc. This is not a sudden decision, but it’s later than I had hoped for getting feedback from a few key people—

Reasons:

The number of people attending each year is dropping, to the point that the awards breakfast attendance was somewhat embarrassing. The lunch crowd looked good, but that was mostly Chowderheads.

Many who would like to attend cannot because of the cost of travel, room and board. And, more and more people have to be at car introductions and events that are the basis of their livelihood--regardless of cost.

John Lamm couldn’t come—he had to be out of the country. Jerry Flint and Beverly Rae Kimes were New Yorkers, so we lucked out there.

Additionally, the publications are cutting back on paying for their people to receive awards in person--even when they get the top awards.

Entry date:

The cutoff for entries is moved from Aug 24 to Sept 8—just AFTER Labor Day. The past three years more and more people found it very hard to make the August date, so we were having to give extensions which cramped the judging time.

Awards distribution:

The awards will all be shipped at the same time, December 18th, so he awardees receive their awards at about the same time.

(Presently, we give about 30% at the awards presentations ((or at least announce them because some of the people who come can’t carry the awards on the planes and we have to ship them from Tucson anyway!)) in November.)

Make the announcement of awards December 18th. This way, we can give the judges a little more time, and have some time to prepare the awards list and have it printed for inclusion in each shipment.

Last year the crunch was so bad that Elaine did not get to bed the night before we flew to NJ, and the computer crashed so she had to spend the weekend re-keying the awards in order to be able to announce them Tuesday at Sardi’s. There was no time to have copies printed to hand out—and needless to say, this certainly was not the professional image that should be exhibited.

Promotion of the IAMA program:

Take the monies that would go to making the formal presentations and direct it towards an expanded effort to gain more publicity for those who have received awards and towards the program overall—to help it better achieve its purpose of “recognizing and encouraging excellence in automotive media.

Future:

I’m not ruling out formal presentations in the future if we can come up with a time and place that would permit more people to participate personally, and a sponsor that would underwrite some of the costs involved.

What’s your input:

This program is not the “Walter and Elaine” thing—though we are the administrators, facilitators—the key people are the entrants and the judges.

We’ve posted the 2006 IAMA Entry Forms today, simultaneously with sending this letter. I am asking for your input about these changes over a very short period of time.

I look forward to receiving any input you would like to make, by July 31, 2006.

Sincerely,

Walt

THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

image

Chirstas 2005

The Twelve Days of Christmas is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me.

What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won’t come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas? Today I found out. And here I share it with you.

Tucson AZ December 25, 2005 (WDB), ,,,From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church.

Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

Three French hens stood for faith, hope, and love.

The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John.

The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.

The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.

The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles’ Creed.

So there is your history for today. This knowledge was shared with me and I found it interesting and enlightening and now I know how that strange song became a Christmas Carol ... so pass it on if you wish.

My gift to you ... Have a blessed Christmas! And happy Holidays to all.

Lance Reventlow (seated in the car) brought his new Scarab to Palm Springs on April 12, 1958. I want to use this photo in a new book I’m writing.

Please help me identify the folks in the photo. Looks to me like Bill Krause on the far left. On the far right is Jeri Fleming. Next to Jeri is Carroll Shelby. Next to him is Lindley Bothwell and I think that’s Ann Bothwell kneeling. The fellow in the cowboy hat in back of everyone else looks like Bob Lytle and that’s the kind of hat Bob might wear.

Many of the rest look familiar, but I can’t quite put names to the faces.

Thanks, Art

Can any of you help Art—let’s try to give him a hand here. Best to all, Walter, Editor/Publisher

Overview of IAMA Rules

The International Automotive Media Awards (IAMA), a function of the International Society for Vehicle Preservation, is an awards program. The purpose of this program is to recognize and encourage excellence in all forms of automotive media. Judging is by peers, to a standard; entries may earn up to 100 points. The Foundation IAMAs, Bronze (85-91), Silver (92-96) and Gold (97-100) medallions, are presented for those works so qualified; from among the highest-point (98-100) Gold awards are chosen the Best of Divisions, with Best of 2005 being chosen from the Best of Division awardees.

Judging

Judging of entries is by peers. Entries must meet a minimum standard to qualify for awards. If no entry in a category meets the minimum standards no award will be made in that category. Entries will be judged by Category within their Division.

Entering does not mean that you will be presented with an award or receive recognition for entering. The use of an award for commercial purposes is permissible, write for details as to how to present it. Please contact IAMA™ at: The International Society for VEHICLE Preservation, PO Box 50046, Tucson, AZ 85703-1046, Phone-520-749-2260 - Fax-520-749-3161.

Recognition of Lifetime Achievement History

Jerry Flint was recognized in 2004, John Lamm in 2003, Brock Yates in 2002, Chris Economaki in 2001, Denise McCluggage in 2000, and Leon Mandel in 1999. The first presentation of this prestigious award was to David E Davis, Jr. in 1998.
This award is given to an individual who has, in the eyes of his peers, made a substantial contribution to the craft over a period of twenty-five or more years.
These awards are determined by a committee of thirty members of the automotive media voting for three of ten names submitted by the Selection Committee. Both committees change each year. The continual varying of selectors and voters ensures a broad cross-section of input in determining each year’s recipient.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT, WHAT?

by E. Thomas Monroe

You know, as much as I hate to admit it, but maybe our “Limey” friends do have something on us…

.

Hickery NC September 23, 2005 (WDB-News). ...Great Britain shows this ex-colony how it should be done:

Regarding the Russian submarine snarled in underwater cables a couple of weeks ago.......By the time we cleared all the bureaucratic “B.S.” and got started, Great Britain had arrived, completed the rescue of the seven men trapped in the submarine, and were cleaning up.

England’s Prime Minister Blair made a national speech yesterday in which he more or less said he didn’t give a damn what color you were, what religion you practiced, or how long you’d been in England .... anyone stirring trouble was OUT .... DEPORTED .... GONE! We’re having a hell of a time keeping men, women and children from crossing the borders illegally, we support them when they get here, and put people in jail for reporting them.

Within days of the terrorist attacks in England, Scotland Yard had accounted for every man involved. We’re still looking for 9/11 terrorists, can’t find Bin Laden, and are now trying to get “permission” to search people who might have bombs.

While the rest of the world is dealing with major problems, we’ve got the whole damn Congress fighting over appointment of one Judge and whether or not the Atlanta Braves can keep their mascot.

We’ve become so politically correct we look like idiots to the rest of the world.

God Save the Queen.

OPHELIA TO AFFECT NEELY WEDNESDAY MORNING - KATRINA GOT WILLIAM JEANES

image
by Bill Neely

Ophelia is hurricane number nine.

Wilmington, North Carolina, September 12, 2005 WDB-News, ,,, Well, here we go again. I just got back from the grocery store, which was a lot like Bosnia.  But I’m loaded up on bread, peanut butter, soup and DVDs.  And, oh yes, gin.  The vermouth is no problem; I’ve been using the same bottle for years.

I’ve checked the generator, so we’re ready and waiting. If Ophelia follows the current path, it should reach us by Wednesday morning as a category two storm, which is about 100 mph. The four of us (meaning three cats and I) are going to stay right here in the house that has been withstanding hurricanes for 160 years now.  We’ve done it through eight hurricanes.

More later.

Bill

========

HURRICANE KATRINA WIPES JEANES OUT!

We just made it out. No injuries but house and cars are toast.

(William and Susan Jeanes lived on the Louisiana coast in Pass Christian, midway between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. This area got the full force!)

Thanks for the thoughts.

More later.

Best,

William

55TH ANNUAL PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS STATS AND FACTS

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (Aug. 3, 2005) WDB… – The 55th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is Sunday, Aug. 21.  What began as a little gathering for car buffs in central California’s Del Monte Forest has blossomed into “the world’s concours,” according to event Co-Chairman Sandra Kasky.  “The Pebble Beach Golf Links® are closed one day each year—the third Sunday in August when the 18th fairway welcomes an international collection of automotive style, performance and history.”

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was founded in 1950.
The Lodge at Pebble Beach™ (formerly the Del Monte Lodge) has been the host of the Concours since the event’s inception.
Nearly 30 cars were on display 55 years ago.

227 cars will line the 18th hole of Pebble Beach Golf Links® for the Aug. 21 Concours.  There are 27 judged classes.  The Best of Show is selected from among the class winners.

‘05 participants will bring their cars to Pebble Beach from 26 states and 15 countries (including the U.S.)

50 of the 227 cars in the field come from outside the U.S, representing Italy, England, France, Switzerland, Australia, Hong Kong, Argentina, Holland, Canada, Belgium, Malaysia, Germany, Mexico and Monaco.

The total estimated cost of the vehicles spread across the 18th fairway is $300 million dollars.

This year’s Pebble Beach Concours honors Italian automotive icon Alfa Romeo; the 75th anniversary of Carrozzeria Pinin Farina, the Italian design house whose revolutionary styling has influenced carmakers for nearly eight decades; the 100th anniversary of the classic French designed Delage; and a specially judged Custom Car Class.

Alfa Romeo’s winged BATs (Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica) of the ‘50s—BAT 5, BAT 7 and BAT 9 models, which are considered some of the most inspired designs of the last century—will be at Pebble Beach.  This is the first time the three BATs have been together in the U.S. since the 1989 Pebble Beach Concours.

imageimage

John Rich from Pottsville, Penn., is bringing his 1912 Rauch & Lang Towncar The electric-powered vehicle, which was originally listed at $3,800, was owned by Thomas Edison.

American driving legend Phil Hill, who won the 1955 Pebble Beach Road Race and Best of Show at the ‘55 Concours, will be on-hand to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his double victory.  Hill’s ’55 Ferrari 750 Monza (courtesy of owner Jim Hall) and ’31 Pierce-Arrow (owned by Hill) will be on display.

The celebrated Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR of Sir Stirling Moss will make its final public driving appearance before being retired to the new Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart, Germany.  Moss will be honored at ceremonies commemorating the 50th anniversary of his Mille Miglia road racing victory in the No. 722 SLR.

62 Alfa Romeos will participate, including 27 that traveled to Pebble Beach from outside the U.S.  Seven of the vehicles are from the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese, Italy. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica di Automobili was purchased by Nicola Romeo in 1915 to form Alfa Romeo.)

16 cars in the field were designed by Battista Pinin Farina.  His name was officially changed to Pininfarina in 1961 by order of the president of Italy.

Robert M. Lee from Reno, Nev., is bringing four Pinin Farina designed vehicles, including the earliest known Pinin Farina model – a 1931 Cadillac 452A Pinin Farina Roadster.

Two vehicles formerly owned by Steve McQueen will be competing at the Concours – 1953 Siata 208 S Bertone Spyder and 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Scaglietti Berlinetta Lusso.  McQueen’s son Chad is attending the Concours.

The field of competitors includes comedian Jay Leno (1927 Duesenberg Model X Locke Sedan) and designer Ralph Lauren (1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 MM Touring Spyder).
